Worship Resources for Climate Justice

"All creation is the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are God’s creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings. God has granted us stewardship of creation. We should meet these stewardship duties through acts of loving care and respect." (Social Principles, ¶ 160)

Week 8 - 11/01/2020 - The Widow at Zarephath

Elijah the prophet spread God’s message that it was not going to rain. God led Elijah to a brook where he could find water to drink. God also sent ravens with bread and meat. When the brook dried up, God sent Elijah to a widow in a town called Zarephath. Elijah told her to use her limited resources to make him a small cake. God then kept filling her jars of flour and oil until the drought ended.

Week 8 - 11/01/2020 - The Widow at Zarephath

Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.  For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”

Week 5 - 10/11/2020 - The Golden Calf

The Israelites grow impatient with Moses’ leadership and with the wilderness and decide to create an idol to worship that looks a lot like the pagan idols so commonplace at the time. The Israelites make sacrifices before their new idol, a golden calf, and bow down before it in worship, claiming that this “god” was the one to bring them out of Egypt.

Week 5 - 10/11/2020 - The Golden Calf

When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”
